Why only on Amazon?
This book is an experiment, and that experiment could only be carried out through self-publishing. I made the deliberate choice to write a book about artificial intelligence with artificial intelligence, because I know it can be done without giving up any intellectual rigour. I did not want to have to negotiate that choice with a publishing house that would have needed convincing, at a time when AI is shaking up the cultural industries and publishers’ caution is understandable.
I did not want to depend on anyone to carry out this experiment as an author freely, to the very end. And to the very end did not only mean writing the book with AI, as I explain in “The Making of This Book”, but actually producing everything else: the layout, the printing, the proofreading, the ISBN, the legal deposit, the sales settings, and so on. So I had to be the publisher as well.
This book is an experiment in authorship and in publishing at once, and it required a platform that makes it possible for a single person to distribute a book worldwide, on demand, in print and digital, with no stock and no intermediary. That was the material condition of the experiment.
